Nashville advances ordinance to eliminate unmetered water connectionsThe Metropolitan Council has approved a measure on second reading that removes sections of the city code authorizing unmetered connections to the Metro Water Services system.

Ordinance BL2026-1435 passed its second reading via the consent calendar during the July 7, 2026, meeting.

The legislation amends Title 15 of the Metropolitan Code of Law to strike provisions allowing unmetered water connections.

The council also approved the acceptance of Public Water System Settlement Funds from BASF Corporation on first reading.

During its July 7, 2026, meeting, the Metropolitan Council of Nashville and Davidson County advanced an ordinance to amend regulations governing the city's water distribution network. Ordinance BL2026-1435, sponsored by Council Members Evans-Segall, Welsch, and Ewing, was approved unanimously on its second reading as part of the council's consent calendar. The legislation amends Title 15 of the Metropolitan Code of Law to explicitly remove sections that authorize unmetered water connections within the Metro Water Services system. The ordinance advanced without public opposition or council debate and will require a third and final reading before full adoption. In separate water-related actions during the same meeting, the council approved Ordinance BL2026-1466 on first reading. This measure accepts and appropriates Public Water System Settlement Funds from BASF Corporation to the Metropolitan Department of Water and Sewerage Services. Additionally, the council adopted Resolution RS2026-2108, authorizing the Director of Public Property to exercise option agreements for the purchase of a flood-prone property at 5409 Illinois Avenue on behalf of Metro Water Services.
