Sturgis currently produces groundwater for approximately $3 per 1,000 gallons, excluding capital project debt. Officials warned that purchasing regional surface water could potentially triple that cost, raising questions about the financial viability of a connection, especially if the regional authority mandates minimum monthly water purchases. Water quality and treatment compatibility present additional challenges. Sturgis currently utilizes minimal treatment—primarily light chlorination and fluoride. Officials warned that introducing surface water, which requires distinct and heavier treatment processes, could cause compatibility issues and alter the water's taste and quality. Furthermore, the massive scale of the proposed twin 72-inch regional pipelines raised concerns about adequate water turnover and the risk of stagnation if Sturgis does not draw sufficient volume.
