The Charlotte City Council unanimously approved an interlocal agreement with the town of Cornelius on April 27, 2026, to execute the Smithville Water System Improvements Project. The resolution authorizes the city manager, or a designated representative, to negotiate and finalize the agreement. Furthermore, the city manager is authorized to approve reimbursement requests covering the actual costs of the utility construction. The infrastructure advancement arrives as the region grapples with tightening water resources. During the meeting's invocation, it was highlighted that Charlotte Water has asked residents to practice voluntary water conservation as the area manages dry conditions, emphasizing that the city's natural resources are not unlimited. In addition to the Smithville project, the council ratified an Urban Cost Share Program agreement with the Mecklenburg Soil and Water Conservation District. Through the consent agenda, the council also authorized several other municipal water and stormwater initiatives. These included security services for Charlotte Water facilities, valve reconditioning services, and an amendment for the Lorna-Laburnum Storm Drainage Improvement Project.
