District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (DC Water) is accelerating its push toward technological modernization, with utility leadership outlining plans to integrate artificial intelligence into its operational workflows and launching a new innovation facility. During the June 4 board meeting, CEO and General Manager David L. Gadis detailed the utility's ongoing AI-led reinvention efforts. Following a recent executive AI event, DC Water is evaluating how connected systems and AI-enabled workflows can improve visibility and accelerate operational responses. Gadis noted that a tailored demonstration highlighted the potential to link operational, customer, and GIS information to deliver targeted communications during service disruptions and infrastructure events—capabilities the utility currently cannot fully leverage. The next steps will focus on applying similar AI capabilities within DC Water's data environments while measuring the operational impact and overall business value. Alongside its digital initiatives, the utility announced the creation of a new Discovery Center to demonstrate proven water technologies. The center is designed to serve as an educational resource for researchers, students, and other utilities. DC Water plans to feature the Discovery Center during the upcoming ACE 26 conference on June 26, which is expected to bring more than 15,000 water professionals to Washington, D.C. On the procurement and infrastructure front, the Board of Directors unanimously approved several key contracts via its consent agenda. Notably, the board authorized Supplemental Agreement No. 1 for a Construction Management Basic Ordering Agreement (BOA-10) covering wastewater treatment facilities, awarded to AECOM. The board also approved a contract with Optimum Controls Corp for the instrumentation and repair of electrical control equipment, and an agreement with AAA Complete Building Services, Inc. for HVAC corrective maintenance and emergency repairs. Additionally, the utility authorized participation in the District of Columbia Department of Transportation's Aspen Street NW Rehabilitation Project.
