The governor vetoed the bill, stating in a letter that a "brackish groundwater silver bullet will not solve Arizona's water challenges." The state's broader water augmentation funding has also suffered from legislative sweeps. Gray confirmed during the meeting that WIFA has had "several hundred million swept of the initial billion" intended to seed the agency. He estimated that WIFA currently retains less than half of its original $1 billion allocation, though the authority is still actively considering a handful of augmentation projects with its remaining balance. A recent budget package passed by House and Senate Republicans proposed a 5% cut to the Arizona Department of Water Resources, alongside a $30 million transfer to the Long-Term Water Augmentation Fund.
