The city accepted maintenance responsibilities for the Culver Road Sewer Project, a wastewater extension spearheaded by the Tuscaloosa County Commission.

The resolution officially allows local residents to begin connecting to the newly installed sanitary sewer infrastructure.

Following resident complaints regarding yard damage and a sinkhole, officials confirmed the contractor remains financially responsible for repairs under a one-year warranty.

In a separate action, the committee approved a $46,700 contract with CivilWorx Construction to replace 475 feet of aging galvanized water main.

The Tuscaloosa Public Projects Committee has officially accepted maintenance responsibilities for the Culver Road Sewer Extension, marking the completion of a key wastewater infrastructure project coordinated with the Tuscaloosa County Commission. During the August 18 meeting, presenter Mike Gardiner confirmed that the county had successfully obtained the necessary easements and turned them over to the city's water and sewer department. The committee's approval allows local residents to officially connect to the newly installed sanitary sewer system. However, the transition of the infrastructure prompted questions from the committee regarding construction quality and liability. A committee member noted receiving multiple complaints from residents regarding property damage caused during the installation, including a sinkhole that developed in a resident's yard. Gardiner clarified that the financial burden of repairing the damage will not fall on the municipal utility. Because the project was managed through the county, any outstanding property damage or structural issues will be handled by the original contractor. Staff confirmed that the contractor is bound by a one-year warranty period to resolve issues such as the sinkhole and damaged yards before the city assumes full long-term liability for the site's condition. In addition to the Culver Road project, the committee also accepted public sanitary sewer infrastructure for Oakmont, a new townhome subdivision located on Hargrove Road. On the drinking water side, the committee authorized a minor public works contract to address aging distribution infrastructure. Presenter Bryan Gurney noted that CivilWorx Construction was awarded a $46,700 contract to replace an undersized 1.25-inch galvanized water main on Short 17th Street. The project will install 475 feet of upgraded 2-inch PVC pipe. Funded through the water distribution capital repairs account, the pipeline renewal is slated to take approximately 30 days and will commence in September.
